robins do eat nuts, but prefer to take them from a table or the ground. We feed the birds all year round, and I find that the robin is the guard for the sparrows. He is the one that seems to inform them that food is avaliable. They also like the fat balls, and they are very nutricious.

Yes, you're right. If the house was covered in lights, then I would be more sympathetic. If they managed to get the road closed I'd be full of admiration. I notice that the lights were turned on in Oxford Street last night, so I guess my neighbours aren't that early after all - sigh! more…

To do it well you have to go over the top - half hearted illuminations are just that.

I love it when a whole road or close do it - people even drive round to find them just admire and get in the spirit.

Of course the middle class humbugs round here won't bother :( they're too PC more…

I know what you mean though.
There is one house near us that as soon as the bonfire and fireworks have gone, out come the deccies. They do it every year, and they say it's for the kids. I think its really for the dad, who is a big softie.

I do wonder who decides to put blaring disco music on at such an attraction/event. I'm aged under 30 and think that an ice skating rink should either feature softer music or music of the season, i.e. well known winter or Christmas songs.

Plus, we'd all feel Christmassy then! more…

I too have noticed the lack of snowy winters, where as when I was a child I recall trudging around town through layers of slush and snow for a large part of the winter.
An aspect of climate change that I never really considered before is the growing number of people who may never make a snow man, throw snow balls or go sledging. In years to more…

I'm told (but not really being into wine, don't know) that it's pretty difficult to get anything other than French wines over here. I guess in off licences it might be possible, but certainly in our local supermarket that's the case - no english or german beer either! more…

It isn't a big deal over here anymore either. It used to be because it would have been the first wine of the year released with the 2005 vintage. However because they harvest in April in the Southern hemisphere you can now get Aussie and New Zealand wines long before BN is released. The first wine of the year is usually Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc these d more…
